Document settings

Some things belong to the whole document rather than to a block: its language, its title page, its abstract, its table of contents and its bibliography.

To see the document's settings, select no block: click the empty margin of the page. The right column then shows the Document panel.

Language

English or French. It is the language LaTeX typesets the document in, which decides:

  • the words LaTeX prints on its own — "Chapter" or "Chapitre", "Table" or "Tableau", "Contents" or "Table des matières", "Proof" or "Démonstration", "Theorem" or "Théorème";
  • the typographic rules — in French, the spaces before : ; ! ? and the layout of lists.

The editor shows those words in the document's language too, so a French document reads "Tableau 2.1" while you write it, whatever language the interface is in.

Changing the language does not translate what you wrote.

The title page

The title page is always there, at the top of the page in the editor.

  • Title. Type it in the first field. Leave it empty and the PDF prints the document's name instead.
  • Authors. Click Add an author; press Enter to add the next one, and Backspace in an empty author to remove it. With no author, nothing is printed. Up to 20 authors.
  • Date. Click the date to choose between Compilation date (today's date each time the document is compiled, written in the document's language), Custom date (printed as you write it, for example "Spring 2026"), and No date.

In the PDF the title, the authors and the date are set on a page of their own, before everything else.

The title printed on the title page and the document's name in your dashboard are two different things: renaming the document does not change a title you typed.

Abstract

Switch Abstract on in the Document panel, then write it at the top of the page, under the title. It may hold several paragraphs, with the same formatting as any text.

The abstract is printed on its own page, after the title page. Switching it off keeps its text; it is simply not printed. An empty abstract prints nothing.

Table of contents

Switch Table of contents on. The PDF then prints the list of your chapters, sections and subsections with their page numbers, after the title and the abstract. Each entry is a link to its heading in the PDF.

The editor shows a preview of the entries at the top of the page; click one to jump to its heading. Page numbers only exist in the PDF.

  • Sub-subsections (H3) are not listed, as in any LaTeX report.
  • A heading marked Plain is left out.
  • The table updates itself: there is nothing to refresh.

Bibliography

Switch Bibliography on. A reference list appears at the bottom of the page, where you add your references. It is printed after the last block of the document, and added to the table of contents when there is one. See Citing sources.
