Citing sources
Texifine keeps your reference list at the end of the document and numbers your citations for you: [1], [2]… A citation points at an entry, not at a number, so it stays right when the list changes.
Step 1 — Switch the bibliography on
Click the empty margin of the page so that no block is selected, then switch Bibliography on in the Document panel. A reference list appears at the bottom of the page.
Step 2 — Add your references
At the bottom of the page, click Add a reference. Click an entry to open its fields.
- Choose its type: Article, Book, Conference, Thesis, Web page or Other.
- Fill in what you know. Every field is optional.
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| Authors | As they should be printed: "E. Noether", "Knuth, D. E. and Lamport, L." |
| Title | The title of the work. |
| Journal / Collection / Conference / Institution / Website | Where it appeared. The label follows the type. |
| Publisher | For books. |
| Year | |
| Volume, Pages | Printed as "vol. 12" and "pp. 45–67" ("p." in a French document). |
| DOI or URL | Printed on its own, and clickable in the PDF. |
The entry shows the reference as the PDF will print it, so you see the result while you type.
How a reference is printed
Texifine applies one consistent style: the authors, the title, where it appeared, the publisher, the volume and pages, the year, then the link.
Italics go to the journal, book or conference when there is one, and to the title otherwise — the usual convention.
Step 3 — Cite
- Put the caret where the citation should appear.
- Press
Ctrl+Alt+C, or select text and click the citation button. - Tick one or several references and click Done.
One citation can name several references: it prints "[1, 3]" rather than "[1][3]".
Click a citation to change what it cites. In the PDF, each number is a link to its entry in the list.
Numbering and order
- References are numbered in the order of the list: the first entry is [1].
- The list is printed in the order shown. It is not sorted alphabetically or by order of citation: you set the order. Hover an entry and use the two arrows to move it up or down; the numbers follow, and so does every citation in the text.
- Every entry is printed, cited or not. An entry you have not cited is marked "not cited" in the editor so you can spot it.
- An entry with nothing filled in is not printed and takes no number.
The heading and the table of contents
The list is printed after your last block under "Bibliography" ("Bibliographie" in French). With chapters it starts on a new page. When the table of contents is on, the bibliography is listed in it.
When something looks wrong
| You see | Why |
|---|---|
| "[?]" instead of a number | The cited entry was deleted or emptied. Click the citation and choose another. |
| "Turn the bibliography on…" in the picker | The bibliography is switched off in the Document panel. |
| An entry marked "not cited" | Nothing cites it. It is printed anyway; delete it if you do not want it. |
What it cannot do
- No BibTeX import. Entries are filled in by hand, field by field.
- One citation style: numbers in square brackets. No author–year style ("Noether, 1921"), no footnote citations.
- No page or chapter in a citation ("[2, p. 14]"): write it in your sentence.
- No automatic sorting of the list (alphabetical, or by order of citation): move the entries yourself.
- Up to 200 references per document.
- One bibliography per document, at the end.
