Limits and what is not supported

Texifine only offers what its PDF can print. This page gathers the numbers and the things it does not do yet, so you know before you start.

Numbers

WhatLimit
Image filePNG or JPEG, up to 5 MB
Figure width10 % to 100 % of the text width
Table, in the editor50 rows × 10 columns
Lines in a table cell6
Matrix20 columns; the builder offers up to 10 rows
Columns2 or 3
Title500 characters
Authors20, each up to 200 characters
Name of a theorem200 characters
Author and source of a quote200 characters each
References200 per document
Document name255 characters
Bin30 days before permanent deletion
Storage100 MB per account: the content of your documents and their images — see Your documents
Documents200 per account, the bin included
Text of one document5 MB — its images are not part of it. A long thesis is around 1 MB

Compilation

WhatLimit
Documents compiling at once2 per account
Compilations300 per hour per account
Duration of one compilation30 seconds
Exports (.zip)30 per hour per account

A document that did not change since its last compilation is served from memory and does not count. When a limit is reached, the editor says how long to wait.

Page layout — fixed for every document

  • A4 paper, 1-inch margins, 11 pt Latin Modern, one column.
  • The report class: chapters, sections, subsections.
  • Page numbers at the bottom; no headers or footers of your own.
  • A title page at the start, always.

LaTeX — what is loaded

The source uses a fixed set of packages, added only when a block needs them:

PackageUsed for
babelThe document's language
geometryMargins
amsmath, amssymbFormulas
amsthmTheorems and proofs
graphicx, floatFigures
booktabsTables
listingsCode
captionCaptions inside columns, link targets
ulemUnderline and strikethrough
hyperrefLinks: table of contents, references, citations
urlLinks of the bibliography

A formula that uses one of their commands also loads, on its own: mathtools, bm, cancel, mathrsfs, xcolor, stmaryrd, braket, amscd, extarrows, colonequals — see Equation.

No other package can be added, and there is no custom preamble. Commands from tikz, siunitx, physics, biblatex and others are not available.

Not supported yet

In text

  • Links, highlighting, font and size changes, inline code.
  • Colours other than the six of the palette, and colour in a heading.
  • Raw LaTeX in text — commands are printed, not run.
  • Scripts other than Latin: Cyrillic, Greek words, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean — and emoji. Individual Greek letters work.
  • Formatting inside a footnote, a caption or a table cell.

In the document

  • Blank pages, landscape pages, two-column documents.
  • Appendices numbered A, B, C; Roman page numbers for the front pages.
  • A list of figures or a list of tables; an index; a glossary.
  • Numbering of sub-subsections (H3) in a document that has chapters.
  • Custom numbering styles.

In blocks

  • Custom list markers, description lists, more than four levels of sub-lists.
  • Merged cells, column widths and multi-page tables.
  • Sub-figures; PDF, SVG, GIF or WebP images.
  • Plots and diagrams drawn from a formula or with TikZ.
  • Captions and numbers on code listings; code colours; typographic characters in code.
  • Custom theorem kinds and styles; separate counters per kind.
  • Macros of your own in formulas.

Around the document

  • Importing .tex, BibTeX, Word or Markdown files, or an archive exported from Texifine.
  • Exporting to Word, Markdown or HTML, and exporting all your documents at once. A document is exported as an archive of its LaTeX source, its files and its PDF — see Compiling.
  • Sharing, collaboration, comments, version history, duplicating a document.
  • Offline use: compiling needs a connection.

Known behaviours

Not errors, but worth knowing:

  • A line break with no line to end is not printed: Shift+Enter at the very start of a paragraph, or at its very end.
  • Sub-lists stop at four levels. A fifth level is printed on the fourth.
  • Two page breaks in a row give one new page, not a blank one — and a page break before a chapter adds nothing.
  • A proof that ends with an equation prints its □ on the line below.
  • A statement that begins with a list prints the first item on the heading's line.
  • Sections under an unnumbered chapter keep the numbering of the previous chapter. Mark them Plain as well.
  • Figures and tables set to top or bottom may land on another page than their block: that is how LaTeX places floats.
  • The first compilation after an update of Texifine may take a little longer: the document is rebuilt instead of being served from memory.
