Figure
An image with a caption, centred, numbered by LaTeX.
Adding an image
Insert a Figure block, then drop an image on it or click it to choose a file.
- Formats: PNG and JPEG.
- Size: up to 5 MB per image.
- Storage: images count towards the 100 MB of your account. When it is full, a new image is refused — see Your documents to make room.
To change the image later, select the figure and click Replace image in the right column.
An image that no figure of the document uses any more — replaced, or its figure deleted — is kept for 7 days, so an undo still finds it, then deleted for good.
An image belongs to the document it was added to and is only served through your account.
Caption and number
Type the caption under the image. It is plain text.
The caption is what numbers the figure. A figure with a caption is "Figure 1" — or "Figure 2.1" inside chapter 2 — and can be referenced. A figure without a caption is an unnumbered illustration: it is printed, but it has no number and cannot be the target of a cross-reference.
In the caption field, Enter continues below the figure and Backspace in an empty caption deletes the block.
Width
Set the width in the right column, from 10 % to 100 % of the text width. The proportion is the same on screen and in the PDF. The height follows; the image is never distorted.
Placement
| Placement | What LaTeX does |
|---|---|
| here | The figure is printed exactly where the block is. |
| top | The figure floats to the top of a page — this one or the next. |
| bottom | The figure floats to the bottom of a page. |
With top and bottom, LaTeX chooses the page: the figure may appear a little before or after the surrounding text. That is normal for scientific documents — refer to it by its number rather than "the figure below".
Referring to a figure
Press Ctrl+Alt+R in a text and choose the figure. The reference prints the number; write "Figure" before it. In the PDF the number links to the top of the figure.
What it cannot do
- No PDF, SVG, GIF or WebP images. Convert them to PNG or JPEG first. Vector drawings should be exported as high-resolution PNG.
- No cropping, rotation or editing.
- No formatting or formula in the caption: it is plain text.
- No sub-figures (a), (b) with a shared caption. To set two images side by side, put two figures in columns.
- No text wrapped around a figure. A figure sits on its own; use columns to put text beside it.
- A figure in a column does not float: it stays where it is, whatever its placement.
- A figure cannot be placed inside a theorem.
- A figure with no image prints nothing.
What it prints
\begin{figure}[H]
\centering
\includegraphics[width=0.80\linewidth]{images/…}
\caption{A phase diagram}
\label{blk-…}
\end{figure}[H] is "here", [t] top and [b] bottom.
